Universities that foster entrepreneurship shouldn’t be afraid to get their feet wet

The South of England contains some of the UK’s top Universities, which are increasingly investing in the development of business centres to encourage commercial innovation and enterprise.

These provide a starting point both for new companies exploiting research work from the university’s academics and for entrepreneurs who want to take advantage of its facilities.

The benefits for new companies are clear – for example, links with the latest research and the availability of professional services – but the universities also see advantages from their connection with the commercial world. The Sussex Innovation Centre in Brighton, linked to Sussex University, is, says its director, Mike Herd, a business incubator that aims to create the right environment for those who want to develop technology and other companies.

“We provide a community that gives people the backing they need when they start out – people who are doing entrepreneurial things, rather than instinctive entrepreneurs.” he says.
